NAUSICAA 2IC Fixed Effluent Gas Monitor

NAUSICAA 2IC Fixed Effluent Gas Monitor

The NAUSICAA 2IC Fixed Effluent Gas Monitor has been developed to monitor beta activity originating from tritium and noble gases.

Description

The NAUSICAA 2IC Fixed Effluent Gas Monitor is a fixed gas monitoring system developed for the measurement of beta activity originating from tritium and other noble gases in air or gas flows, and for the compensation of environmental gamma background.

The NAUSICAA 2IC can be utilized for the radiological monitoring of air or gas samples taken from locations such as room air, stack lines, fume hoods, effluent passages, process pipelines, glove box systems, and similar points.

The system consists of two identical 10-liter stainless steel ionization chambers, a pneumatic sampling system, an electrometer that amplifies weak ionization currents, and a local control unit with a display.

While the sampled air is directed to the upper ionization chamber, the lower ionization chamber is kept sealed with clean reference air. Environmental gamma background and beta contamination are measured concurrently in the upper chamber, whereas only gamma background interactions are evaluated in the lower chamber.

By applying high voltage with opposite polarity to the two ionization chambers, the measurement signal is obtained as the difference between the outputs of the two chambers. This allows for the calculation of net beta contamination in the sampled air as an activity concentration.

Filtration and drying equipment assists in reducing undesirable effects in the sampled air. The touch-screen control unit manages data acquisition, processing, display, alarm thresholds, and system status monitoring.
