Description
The WAM-400 Radioactive Waste Characterization System is a tomographic gamma scanning system developed for the quantitative and qualitative characterization of radioactive waste stored in drums.
The WAM-400 is utilized for the determination of radionuclides in radioactive waste drums, the calculation of total activity, and the evaluation of activity and material density distribution within the drum. It is particularly suitable for waste drums exhibiting high heterogeneity in terms of activity sources and material density.
The system initiates the measurement process by weighing the waste drum on a rotating platform. Subsequently, different volumetric sections within the drum are evaluated through density measurement and gamma spectrometric analysis stages. This allows for a more detailed analysis of radionuclide activity, mass activity, and density distribution within the drum.
The WAM-400 performs tomographic analysis by dividing the drum into vertical layers and volumetric sections using an HPGe detector and collimator structure. Peak attenuation correction and density measurement assist in reducing measurement uncertainties that may arise from non-homogeneous material distribution.
The WAMIS data and control software supports new measurement initiation, manual system control, calibration, measurement archiving, recording of error and status messages, and reporting operations. The system can be configured for different drum types, activity levels, and handling requirements according to customer needs.
